What are the requirements?
To enroll in a 40-hour program
Our prerequisites are the same as the national certifying organizations:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Have completed high school (or GED) in any country.
- Have advanced linguist proficiency in both English and your working language.
Please note that we do not require that you send us proof (paperwork) of the above; however, you will need to submit it to the certifying organization when you apply to take the national exam. Medical background or interpreting experience are not required. No additional screening fees to enroll or testing fees to exit the training program!
Continuing Ed
Anyone interested in improving their skills can take our continuing education courses.
Our courses are approved for interpreters certified by CCHI, National Board, ATA, and the state of Oregon.
How about equipment?
Internet
You’ll need internet connection and a device to connect, e.g., desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile. We also recommend you have a couple of browsers installed, e.g., Google Chrome, Firefox, Explorer, or Safari (Mac).
Notebooks
Being organized will help you succeed in this course. Please get a new notebook to take your notes. You’ll also need a few pens, highlighters, and a notepad to use when interpreting. Scrap paper is fine too.
Voice Recording
A voice recording device will be needed to do the practice exercises. Nowadays, most smartphone have recording capabilities. Don’t worry, you won’t have to send us your recordings. This is for in-class use only.
Headphones
This is optional, but it would help you stay focused and better perform certain exercises. It’s also a good idea to get used to using them because you’ll need some on the day of national exam. Earbuds are good too.
Printer
This is also optional. You will be able to download and print your worksheets and documents to create your student’s handbook. Otherwise, you can use your notebook to complete the exercises.
How about books?
You’ll have all the material available for download. You can create your manual by placing all downloads in a folder on your computer or by printing the documents and worksheets. No books to buy!
